Residential Childcare

Kids Safe Haven provides 24-hour residential care within a safe, stable and nurturing home environment.

Children and young people receive consistent support from trained residential childcare professionals who are experienced in working with children who may have experienced trauma, neglect, disrupted attachments or placement instability.

Our residential care focuses on:

     • providing stability and predictable routines

     • building trusting relationships between children and staff

     • maintaining clear boundaries and consistent expectations

     • ensuring children feel safe, valued and respected

     • supporting emotional regulation and positive behaviour development

Staff are available at all times to provide guidance, supervision and emotional support. The home environment is designed to be calm, structured and supportive, allowing children to feel secure and develop a sense of belonging.

Emotional Wellbeing Support

Supporting the emotional wellbeing of children is central to the work of Kids Safe Haven.

Many children entering residential care have experienced significant trauma or adversity. Our approach recognises the impact these experiences can have on emotional development and behaviour.

Children are supported through:

     • regular key work sessions with trusted staff

     • opportunities to talk about their feelings and experiences

     • guidance in recognising and understanding emotions

     • emotional regulation strategies and coping techniques

     • restorative conversations following incidents or conflict

The home promotes a therapeutic environment where children feel listened to, understood and supported. The presence of a therapeutic support dog also plays an important role in helping children feel calmer, develop empathy and build confidence in relationships.

Education Support

Education is an important part of helping children build confidence, develop life skills and prepare for their future.

Kids Safe Haven works closely with:

    • schools and alternative education providers

     • local authority virtual schools

     • education welfare services

     • tutors and specialist education professionals

Staff support children to attend and engage in education by:

     • encouraging school attendance and participation

     • supporting homework and study routines

     • attending education meetings and reviews

     • promoting positive attitudes towards learning

    • helping children access additional educational support where required

Where children have experienced difficulties with education in the past, staff work sensitively to rebuild confidence and re-engage them with learning.

Family Contact Support

Maintaining safe and meaningful relationships with family members can be an important part of a child’s emotional wellbeing and identity development.

Kids Safe Haven supports family contact arrangements in line with each child’s care plan and guidance from the placing local authority.

This may include:

     • facilitating supervised or supported contact

     • helping children prepare emotionally for contact visits

     • supporting children after contact where needed

     • working collaboratively with social workers and families

     • ensuring contact arrangements are safe and appropriate

Staff understand that contact can sometimes bring complex emotions for children and provide sensitive support before and after visits.

Independence and Life Skills

Preparing young people for independence is an important part of residential care.

At Kids Safe Haven, young people are supported to develop the practical skills needed to manage daily life and prepare for adulthood.

This includes support with:

     • cooking and preparing healthy meals

     • budgeting and money management

     • personal organisation and routines

     • laundry and household responsibilities

     • travel training and using public transport

     • managing appointments and responsibilities

Staff work alongside young people to gradually build confidence in these skills, encouraging independence while continuing to provide guidance and support.

Through this process, young people are helped to develop

Therapeutic Animal Support

Kids Safe Haven incorporates animal-assisted support as part of the nurturing and therapeutic environment within the home. The presence of a trained therapeutic support dog provides children with opportunities to experience calm, comfort and positive emotional engagement.

For many children who have experienced trauma or disrupted attachments, forming trusting relationships with adults can take time. Interaction with animals can help bridge this gap by providing a non-judgemental, calming and emotionally supportive presence.

The therapeutic dog supports children in a number of ways, including:

     • helping to reduce anxiety and emotional distress

     • encouraging emotional regulation and calm behaviour

     • supporting children who may struggle with communication

     • promoting empathy, responsibility and nurturing behaviours

     • providing comfort during times of emotional difficulty

Children may spend time with the therapeutic dog during relaxed activities such as walks, quiet time in the home or during supportive interactions with staff. For some children, this can become an important part of helping them feel safe and supported.

The inclusion of a therapeutic dog contributes to creating a warm, homely and emotionally supportive environment, helping children build confidence and trust in relationships.

Behaviour Stabilisation and Crisis Support

Many children referred to residential care have experienced multiple placement breakdowns or periods of instability. Kids Safe Haven provides a structured and supportive environment designed to help children stabilise emotionally and behaviourally.

Staff are experienced in supporting children who may present with complex behaviours, including emotional dysregulation, risk-taking behaviours or difficulties managing frustration and distress.

Our approach focuses on understanding the underlying reasons behind behaviour and responding with consistency, structure and therapeutic support rather than punitive responses.

Children are supported through:

     • clear routines and predictable daily structure

     • individual behaviour support plans

     • restorative conversations following incidents

     • guidance in emotional regulation and coping strategies

     • consistent boundaries delivered in a calm and supportive manner

When children experience periods of heightened distress or crisis, staff provide additional support and supervision to help de-escalate situations safely while maintaining the dignity and wellbeing of the child.

We work closely with social workers, mental health services, education providers and other professionals to ensure that children receive the support they need during periods of difficulty.

Through stability, consistency and therapeutic guidance, children are supported to develop safer behaviours, improved emotional regulation and greater confidence in managing challenges.
